STINGING INSECT INFORMATION
* Nearly all stings are delivered in defense of the nest.
* Two reactions to stings: Local vs. Allergic.
* It is estimated that less than 1% of population is allergic.
* Allergic individuals should carry a sting kit. (Ana-Kit)
* Public education is the best protection.
* Sanitation around buildings is very important. (Trash management)
* Avoid scented products: perfume, hairspray, after shave.
STING TREATMENT
When stung, immediately apply a pinch of moistened table salt directly to the sting site and leave it in place for about 30 minutes. Note: This information is listed first since salt is more likely to be available than commercial sting relief preparations or meat tenderizer and probably works just as well.
It should also be noted that any topical treatment WILL NOT prevent a severe allergic reaction in a highly sensitive individual. Get highly sensitive individuals to a medical facility ASAP.
All stings hurt. Topical applications of salt, meat tenderizer, or commercial products will only help the patient feel a little better at the time. Always note the time of the sting. Most severe allergic reaction occur in the first 30 minutes
